The visit of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is a must for any trip to the United Arab Emirates.
It's one of the largest mosques in the world, and in my opinion, one of the most beautiful.
Let me take you on a tour!
Abu Dhabi Mosque: article summary
How much will the Abu Dhabi mosque cost?
Admission is free! You'll have to enter through a small structure equipped with an X-ray security machine and changing rooms where you'll be given the traditional clothes to wear.
How do I get to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque?
If you're staying in Abu Dhabi, taking a cab is the easiest way to go. It will drop you off right at the entrance. If you use your own vehicle, there is on-site parking for visitors.
What to wear to the Sheikh Zayed mosque
This is a Muslim site, so modest dress is required for women. Ankle-length trousers/skirts, head coverings and, above all, nothing too tight. For men, It's best to dress conservatively. Pants, closed shoes and a shirt should be sufficient. There are a practical guide on the mosque's website which will give you a better idea of acceptable dress, but the mosque also provides a traditional abaya before entry.
Remember to wear socks if you can't bear to walk barefoot. Bring sunglasses too, as the sun reflects off the mosque during the day, especially on the white domes.
Note that it's also pretty hot in Abu Dhabi, so.., dress accordingly.
What time should I visit the site?
The mosque is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day except Friday where the mosque is only open to visitors after 4:30 pm. Times may change during the holy month of Ramadan, so check the schedule before planning your visit during this period.
Find out more about your visit
Guided tours are free of charge and are available without appointment. I recommend that you arrive about 15 minutes before your scheduled visit. Visits generally last from 45 minutes to one hour.
Is it possible to eat on site?
The only nearby place to eat and drink is the Coffee Club, which serves salads and sandwiches. I advise you to eat well. The site is very large, and you'll need all your strength to enjoy all the wonders it has to offer!
How much time do you need?
Approximately 1 to 2 hours is a good amount of time to see all parts of the mosque, and to enjoy refreshments afterwards if you wish. To make sure you don't run out of steam in the blazing Abu Dhabi sun, I advise you to avoid visiting the mosque during the summer months.. If you have no choice, prefer evening or morning hours to avoid heat peaks.
What not to bring into the Abu Dhabi mosque
Personal food and refreshments are not allowed inside the mosque and will probably be confiscated by security. And don't attract attention with a selfie stick or tripod for your camera. Stay sober and remember that you're in a place considered sacred.
You now have all the information you need to visit the Abu Dhabi Mosque. When you visit the mosque, take a moment to contemplate the grandeur of the site!
