The World Dubai: article summary
The World Dubai, a globe of artificial islands
Dubai is the city of excess and some monuments bear witness to this folie de grandeur: the Burj Khalifa and its 828-metre-high artificial islands, the Palm Jumeirah or the incredible Burj Al Arab.
But one incredible project, initiated in 2003, has astonishing features and wild ambitions: The World Dubai !
It's an archipelago of around 300 artificial islands whose shape, seen from above, represents a map of the world. Some would be accessible to tourists, others private and reserved for the use of celebrities to organize events or luxury vacations.
The project was born in 2003/2004 and should have been completed in 2008. However, the financial crisis put the brakes on the project. More than 60 of the islands' %s have been sold to private individuals, so the necessary investment has not, for the time being, allowed the work to go ahead.
What's the status of The World Dubai project?
For the moment, only one island of the World Dubai is complete: Lebanon Islandcovering 1.5 hectares.
Here you will find the beach club The Royal Island Beach Clubwith its two beaches, bar, swimming pool and restaurant and plenty of activities to delight visitors. It's a real little corner of paradise, far away from it all!
In 2014, a Swedish group decided to restart construction with the The Heart of Europe which currently comprises 8 main islandseach corresponding to a European country or region: Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, St. Petersburg, Portofino, Côte d'Azur, Venice and Central Europe.
It's a collection of interconnected islands with luxury hotels and resorts, an exceptional setting and a view over the sea. the Dubai skylinein the distance. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2023.
The rest of the project is on stand-by due to lack of funding, and this could prove problematic in the long term. The archipelago needs constant maintenance, as waves, currents and tides could damage its structures.
The World Dubai in figures
To give you an idea of the scope of this projectHere are some impressive figures:
- The World Dubai is located in 240 km from the Dubai coast
- Each island costs between 10 and 45 million euros
- More 326 million m3 of raw materials, most of them sand, were needed to build the project.
- The complex extends over 15 km2
- A protective dike of 24 km long was built to protect The World Dubai, making it the world's longest seawall.
