This marvel was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatravaknown for his work on Lisbon's Gare d'Oriente and the Olympic Complex in Athens. And its shape, inspired by the flower lily BudIt features the typical elements of a minaret, including a balcony from which the muezzin calls Muslims to prayer.
The tower's special features include floor-mounted cables which will support the gigantic structure, and systems specially designed to absorb shocks and guarantee the tower's stability.
The project began in 2016 and is scheduled for completion in 2020, to be ready for Dubai World Expo. For the time being, however, only the construction site is visible.
The world's tallest tower
Today, the world's tallest tower is none other than the Burj Khalifa of Dubai, with a summit at 828 metres. It is the current symbol of the city and its most iconic building, but the Dubai Creek Tower could well dethrone it!
While its final height remains a mystery, it is certain to exceed the symbolic 1000 meters high. Some of the craziest figures mentioned include a summit at... 1,345 metres.
Currently, the Burj Khalifa is No. 1 but the tower of Djeddah in Saudi Arabia, whose construction is also at a standstill for the time being, should reach a height of 1,000 meters when completed.
Work delayed
Construction of the Dubai Creek Tower was paused during the Covid-19 crisis in April 2020. The foundations are in place, but the tower itself has not been started.
The Dubai government seems to be waiting for the pandemic to be definitively over before authorizing resumption of work. For the moment, no date has been announced, and it's not known exactly when the Tower will be inaugurated.
