Khor Dubai: what you need to know about this place
Dubai Creek, which the locals also call Khor Dubaiis a natural inlet formed by the waters of the Persian Gulf. It extends into the heart of Dubai, over a length of more than 14 kilometers, reaching the Ras Al-Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, an area inhabited by numerous species of protected seabirds.
Khor Dubai has always been of fundamental importance to the city. Along its shores, the first settlements were built, Bur Dubai and later Deira. The creek has created a natural harbor that has become a hub for trade with the rest of the world.
In the 1960s, it was dredged to allow the navigation of larger ships, and in 2007, the artificial extension of the cove was completed. Khor Dubai no longer ends at the Ras Al-Khor wildlife sanctuary, but from there continues out to sea, making Bur Dubai an island. The new artificial section is called Dubai Water Canal.
